In Autumn 2, we learnt all about the Mayan Civilisation. We started by looking at Mayan objects that had been dug up by archaeologists. We discussed what these objects might have been used for and by who. We learnt about the main events in the Mayan timeline and acted these out in groups. We also learnt about some of the Mayan gods and beliefs. Did you know that people in the Mayan Civilisation believed that they were living on the shell of a giant turtle? At the end of our topic, we learnt about the reasons for the Mayan decline and argued which we thought was the most significant.
On our Mayan themed day, we made guacamole and salsa! These are made using ingredients that people in the Mayan Civilisation would have eaten, such as avocados and tomatoes. We also designed bookmarks using Mayan symbols and used the Mayan number system to break a code.
